The cage without bars: A loss of self-agency
A small excerpt from chapter 4,
The Residue Of Trauma: Learned Helplessness
Imagine a bird, caged for years, suddenly set free. Despite its newfound liberty, it hesitates to fly, its wings weighed down by a lifetime of confinement. This metaphor captures the essence of learned helplessness. A psychological state where individuals conditioned by repeated failure, lack of control, quickly or slowly lose the ability to take independent action. The profound ways that trauma diminishes self-agency is far reaching. Draining an individual’s ability to generate their own thoughts, beliefs, and self-directed action.
